Wasp nest removal in Den Bosch: finding the nest
You rarely see the nest itself. What gives it away is the traffic: wasps vanishing into the same spot again and again. A queen starts alone in spring, and the colony grows all summer.
- an open joint in the brickwork or a crack leading into the cavity wall (spouwmuur)
- under roof tiles, near the ridge or behind a fascia board
- inside a roller-shutter box or behind the cladding of a dormer
- in a shed, summer house or bird box
- in the ground, often in an old mouse hole in the lawn
A grey, papery nest hanging in the open is easy to reach. If it sits inside a cavity, we treat it through the entrance hole.
Why spraying or blocking it yourself goes wrong
A wasp colony defends its nest fiercely. Using a can of spray from the DIY shop means standing right next to the entrance, and the product seldom reaches a nest tucked deep inside a cavity or under the roof boarding.
Sealing the hole or stuffing it with a rag backfires as well. The wasps look for another way out, and that is often indoors: around a ceiling light, a gap by the loft hatch or a pipe opening. If you are allergic, need a ladder, or the nest is above a patio where children play, leave it to a professional. For situations like these, call our pest control in Den Bosch – weekends included.
How our wasp control works
First we look: which species is it, where is the entrance, and is there a route into the house? Ideally we work in the evening, when nearly the whole colony is home. The product goes into or right beside the entrance, so the wasps carry it into the nest themselves.
Things calm down over the following hours. A few wasps the next morning are usually foragers returning home. A nest inside a cavity can simply stay where it is; it does no harm. A free-hanging nest in the loft or shed can be taken down after treatment if you would like.
Bee nest removal in Den Bosch
Not everything that buzzes is a wasp. Honey bees are browner and hairier, and in spring a swarm may hang like a big cluster from a branch, fence or gutter. We do not exterminate honey bees. A beekeeper (imker) can usually collect the swarm or bee nest and rehome it, and the sooner you call, the easier that is.
Bumblebees are best left alone wherever possible: their colonies are small and die off naturally at the end of summer. Tiny bees crawling into the mortar of an old wall in spring are often mason bees, which hardly ever sting. We help you work out which insect you are dealing with.
Hornet nest removal in Den Bosch
The Asian hornet (Aziatische hoornaar) has a dark body, yellow tips to its legs and one broad orange-yellow band towards the rear. In spring the queen often starts low down, in a shed or under a canopy. Later the colony moves to a large nest high in a tree, which often only shows once the leaves drop. If you spot one, report it on waarneming.nl and keep your distance. Taking down a hornet nest at the top of a tree is a job for a professional.
The European hornet is larger, reddish brown with a yellow-and-brown striped abdomen. It nests in hollow trees, bird boxes and sometimes a cavity wall, and will fly towards lights at dusk. If such a nest is close to your door, we work out a safe solution with you.
Preventing wasps: check in spring
In April and May a new nest is no bigger than a golf ball and the queen is still working alone. A quick look under the gutter and in the shed now and then catches it early.
- fit vent covers in open brickwork joints once the season is over
- seal gaps by fascias and shutter boxes in winter
- keep bins and compost containers closed
- don't leave open cans or fruit bowls out on the patio
Rubbish that draws wasps in August also attracts rodents in autumn. Our page on rat control explains how to keep them out.
